December 2004 Hello Knitsters!
But, before i get to the knitty gritty, let's talk cookies! It seems that cookies are the theme for Lettuce Knit's combination Holiday / Anniversary party, taking place next Wednesday, December 8th at 7pm. Everyone is invited; there will be cookies (of course), other goodies, and some secret surprises! Drop in and celebrate the festive season and Lettuce Knit's first year. And now back to knitting news... Who wouldn't want a little something knit with glorious handpainted Fleece Artist yarn? That's right! You can now indulge your Fleece Artist addiction at Lettuce Knit. We have Silken, 2-ply cashmere, Mohair, Kid Silk, Kid Aran, Curly Locks, 2/8 Merino, and wool and kid rovings. Visit www.fleeceartist.com to see photos of these amazing yarns. Natural Hand dyed wool from Sandy Krzanowski is now in the shop. Exclusive to Lettuce Knit, Sandy is a natural dyer on Toronto Island who dyed this wool with onion skins, madder root, golden rod, sumac, alder, oak leaves and rusty nails in vinegar to produce one-of-a-kind skeins that are naturally beautiful. We are fully stocked with Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride in Worsted and Bulky weights. This is the best yarn for felting! We also have a whole lot of felting patterns; bags, hats, mittens, and more! Also be sure to check out Debbie Stoller's new book Stitch n'Bitch Nation, now in the shop. Among its over 50 funky patterns, you will find some really fun felting projects. Two more options for natural fibre machine washable and dryable yarns arrived this week. Louet Sales Euroflax Linen is a high quality, long line, wet spun linen, custom steamed for softness. We have all 31 colours of this beautiful yarn in the store now. Great for baby and kids wear, garments knitted with this yarn get softer and softer the more you wash and dry them. It is also fabulous to use for gift tying and tassel making as suggested in Joelle Hoverson's Last -Minute Knitted Gifts. Also from Louet Sales is GEMS Merino, a 22 micron merino that is so soft that it is even suitable for baby wear, and again it is machine wash & dry! In time for the holidays we have brought in some adorable handknitted stuffed toys and finger puppets from the Kenana Knitters in Kenya. These women knit really sweet monkeys, elephants, leopards, and zebras from local handspun wool. A nice touch is that each woman signs her name to the card that accompanies each animal she knits. Also a special gift for knitters and non-knitters alike is Heal my Hands concentrated moisturizing balm in handy tin containers, which arrived this week. Each cake contains Rosehip Oil for its regenerative properties, Calendula for its antiseptic properties, and Lanolin for moisture and protection. Choose from Winter Solstice a warm blend of Bergamot, Cinnamon, Clove, and Eucalyptus; Lavender Mint, a light blend of Lavender, Peppermint, Spearmint, Rosemary and Bergamot , or Ultra with Calendula and Arnica to help reduce inflammation and swelling, Tea Tree oil as an anti-fungal, Lavender as an antiseptic and Roman Chamomile to soothe. Perfect for hands that have done too much holiday knitting! Also new in the shop and worth a mention: Dog sweater patterns and kits from Stylehounds (www.stylehoundshandknits.com), trendy sweater and accessory patterns from Loop-d-Loop (loop-d-loop.com), Elegant Knitter Brass Sheep Needle and Stitch Gauge -the perfect stocking stuffer for your favourite knitter! Also new in the shop and very exciting is the arrival of Manos del Uruguay yarn. Until now it has been unavailable in Canada. This beautiful yarn is hand spun and kettle dyed over wood fires by a women’s co-operative in Uruguay. The result is a thick and thin yarn with unique striation, giving the effect of several colours in one single strand. No two skeins are exactly alike and there are no dye lots. The content of the yarn is 100% wool, a blend of Merino and Corriedale, both exquisitely soft and supple. I am so happy to finally get my hands on this stuff! It is simply stunning. Come into the store and feel it for yourself. Single shade 100g skeins sell for $15, Multi shade 100g skeins are $17. Last but not least....it’s not knitting, but it’s still fun!
