Sweetgeorgia's Felicia Lo at Lettuce Knit

Another exciting event! Sweetgeorgia's Felicia Lo is visiting Lettuce Knit on Wednesday, November 24th from 7-9pm with a trunk show of samples, yarn, and spinning fibre!

Felicia Lo is a Vancouver-based independent dyer - you know her as Sweetgeorgia! Sweetgeorgia Yarns produces a range of gorgeous wool, silk, cashmere and other luxurious fibres in intense and unapologetic colour.

Felicia will bring examples of projects knit with her various yarns, samples of handspun yarn spun from her fibre, as well as the goods: hand dyed yarn and fibre for you to drool over - and buy!

This is a great opportunity to check out some of the Sweetgeorgia yarns you haven't seen at Lettuce Knit yet!

Felicia will be happy to meet you and answer any questions you have about her dying; this is one Wednesday you don't want to miss!

Fall Berroco Roundup
We have loads of the popular Berroco Ultra Alpaca, in two weights. This blend of 50% superfine alpaca and 50% Peruvian wool is soft and warm. Have you seen Cirilia Rose's Kilorian dress in the Fall issue of Twist Collective?

Original Ultra Alpaca is worsted weight, with generous yardage - 215 yards per 100g skein! Great for all your new winter accessories and sweaters. Looks fantastic in colourwork and stripes too, and comes in lots of earthy shades that go together so well. $11
Check out this fun free sweater pattern - Avocet B!

Ultra Alpaca Light is a light DK or sport weight yarn dyed to match worsted weight Ultra Alpaca - mix the two weights of yarn in one project for a fun twist! Also 50% superfine alpaca and 50% Peruvian wool, Ultra Alpaca Light is 144 yards per 50g and just $7. Just right when you need a smaller amount of yarn - two skeins would be perfect for a pair of stripey mittens!

Fun Chunky Yarns
There are two new chunky yarns from Berroco this fall - both are super soft and work up quickly for near-instant knitterly gratification!

Blackstone Tweed Chunky is a luxurious chunky version of Blackstone Tweed, new for fall. Made up of 65% wool, 25% superkid mohair, and 10% angora, this yarn is soft and squishy! 60 yards per 50g ball and available in lovely jewel tones. Come see our sample of the Dickens vest in store! $12 per ball.

New Campus is a rustic, thick and thin yarn with a fun marled look. The different shades blend together in the knitted fabric for a cohesive, almost tweedy look when knitted up! Made up of 50% wool, 40% acrylic and 10% alpaca, this blend is soft and warm! A generous 130 yards per 100g skein for $13. Check out our sample of Bourtager in store - everyone who sees it falls in love with it!

Vintage and Vintage Chunky
Need an easy care yarn that's super soft and comes in lots of colours? Vintage and Vintage Chunky are the same blend of 50% acrylic, 40% wool and 10% nylon in two versatile weights. This superwash blend is perfect for garments and accessories that will take lots of wear or need to be tossed into the washing machine!

Vintage is worsted weight, with 217 yards per 100g ball and is worked on a 5mm needle. Wonderful for baby items and winter accessories! We have a sample of the Drift sweater, free from Berroco in the shop, come and try it on!

Vintage Chunky is a bulky weight, 130 yards per 100g ball and works up quickly on 6mm needles. Vintage Chunky would be great for Cirilia Rose's free Aidez pattern! Both Vintage and Vintage Chunky are great value yarns at just $8 per skein.

Hello Knitsters!

We've moved! It was a whirlwind of activity...we got the keys to our new space on the first of the month, did painting, etc., for the next three (very long) days, and then took advantage of the holiday monday to move it all over. We were open the following day, September 7 for business as usual!

Our new space is at #86 Nassau Street, just a few doors west of where we were, so you can always start at the old store and follow the signs!

As soon as we were all set up, the Fall yarns started POURING in! We had delayed many shipments, so that we wouldn't have to unpack them twice...so now the new bigger store is close to overflowing with all the new arrivals!

Thank you to all the helpers for making this happen, and thank you Knitters, for making this move possible! We are excited and happy to help you in this new and improved space.

Keep Knitting,
Megan

P.S. Don't worry, we've brought over the stained glass window...it now has pride of place on its very own ledge, overlooking the cash desk!

Hello Knitsters!
I've been dying! I had wanted to get this dyed up before the end of the summer, and I'm glad to report success.

This yarn is white Cascade Fixation which we skeined up and dyed in a riot of fun colours.

It is perfect for socks or cottony soft baby knits. I took one skein, divided it in two, and am working on toe-up socks for my 5 year old daughter.

I'll only need the one skein for a pair - and the stripes are coming out perfect on 48 stitches and a 2.75mm needle.

Here is a great collection of various free patterns that use Cascade Fixation.

The yarn is handpainted on a base of 98.3% cotton and 1.7% elastic and 100 yards in 50 grams. $14 each

Keep Knitting,
Megan

Madil's Kid Seta is a perfect match for this light as air shawl - the laceweight 70% mohair, 30% silk blend is soft, fuzzy, and just glows. Available in over a dozen colours for $15 a ball, Birch takes just three balls.

Hello Knitsters!
Well, it's officially summer! It sure feels like summer in Toronto, lots of sunny hot days. Do people still knit in the summer? YES! In fact, last week i just finished knitting a wool and alpaca blanket! Anytime is a good time for knitting something interesting...but if you don't like the idea of a wool blanket sitting on your lap, maybe reach for something lighter weight, perhaps in juicy summer colours like those shown here!

This photo is of our newly arrived IndigoDragonfly Superwash Lace. For $35 you have 990 yards of handpainted Superwash Merino laceweight yarn. That's enough knitting for the whole summer! (well, depending...)

The names of these colourways are hilarious! For example: "Agnst for the Memories", "Butterflies & Zebra Moonbeams & Fairy Tales", "This is Your Brain on Cookies", and "Angry Bridesmaid", just to name a few.

If I were you, I'd pick up a skein of IndigoDragonfly Superwash Lace, a nice Addi Lace Needle, and a copy of Elizabeth Zimmermann's "Knitter's Almanac", (if you don't already own this perfect little volume) because, according to her, July is for shawl knitting.

Keep Knitting,
Megan

Hello Knitsters!
It's May...and that means two VERY special days...The DKC Knitters Frolic and Mother's Day...one right after the other in fact.

This year at the Knitters Frolic, Lettuce Knit will be exhibiting the yarn and magazines of St.Denis. We will have all of the samples from both issues and every shade of the St.Denis Nordique yarn.

And what's more - We will be joined for the day by the creative force behind St. Denis: Veronik Avery!

The issue shown here is the new Spring/Summer Vol. 2 which we just got in. It's selling very well, and I can't wait to see the projects in person (and try them on!). If you can't make it to the Frolic, we do have both issues of St.Denis in stock, along with the Nordique Yarn, and will have issues of Knitting 24/7 shortly!

p.s. Hot off the press! We just got in a new design of Lettuce Knit printed totes, designed by our very own Natalie Selles. Available in store and at the Knitter's Frolic for $10.

p.p.s. Coming to the Frolic and want to save on postage while you feed your yarn habit? Call the shop this week to have your order ready for pick up at the Frolic, easy peasy.

Hello Knitsters!
Happy Spring!

New yarn is flying in and out of here so fast - sometimes new yarns are gone before we can even announce them to you! Such is the case this month with the IndigoDragonfly MCN Lace Yarn we WERE going to feature in this newsletter, but it is all but gone! Maybe one or two skeins left...Rest assured, we will be getting in more super fabulous yarn from local Indie Dyer Kim McBrien of IndigoDragonfly soon and I will tweet about it when it arrives!

There is other local Indie Dyer Goodness to be had though...we just received a large shipment from Tanis Fiber Arts...read more about that below.

In other news, I finished my hexagon baby blanket for my new little niece Katie! I followed the Hexagon How- To tutorial available for free on the blog Attic 24. This blog is an amazing resource of very well done crochet tutorials. You'll find them on the left hand side, as you scroll down. I used Noro Aya and Rowan All Seasons Cotton.

This project has inspired an upcoming class where you can make your own hexagon or two...I'm telling you, there is something about hexagons...The class can be viewed here along with all of our many, many other classes that we have scheduled through the spring and summer.

Keep Knitting,
Megan

Hello Knitsters!
March certainly came in like a lamb didn't it? Thank goodness too, because I had just the slightest touch of ennui after I watched the closing ceremonies for the Olympics.

What an amazing couple of weeks: watching the Olympics and stretching myself to complete my Olympic Knitting. I finished a Wing O' The Moth Shawlette by Anne Hanson, with time to spare I might add! I used the all Canadian Galawool naturally dyed in Indigo, that we featured in last month's newsletter. I even had the energy to start a new project in that time too, which I will mention below in the Noro paragraph.

It must be that touch of spring in the air that has energized me. Is it strange that my favourite time for knitting and crochet is the spring? It must be the sense of a fresh start that spring inspires in me....mmmmm and fresh new yarn. Read about that below.

Keep Knitting,
Megan

Chunky, Super Soft and Washable too!
If you're looking for the ultimate in chunky merino, this is it! We've got tons of gorgeous colours of Cascade 128 Superwash and they're going fast. Each skein contains 128 yards of plump, two ply yarn - and it's machine washable too. It knits up quickly on 6 or 6.5 mm needles, perfect for one last winter sweater! Silky and so soft. $14.

Exciting New Noro!
The Noro colours we all know and love in several exciting new yarns. Lots of cotton content and perfect for spring. And best of all, these three new Noro yarns are just $10 a ball each!

Furin (left) is a textured, chunky yarn made up of 52% Cotton, 17% Silk, 17% Wool, 9% Viscose and 5% Nylon. Knits up fast on 6.5 or 7mm needles. 110m per 50g ball.

The yarn everyone's been waiting for! Sekku (bottom right) is laceweight 50% cotton , 16% silk, 17% wool and 17% nylon. Perfect for all those lightweight and lacy projects. Amazing value too - each 50g ball contains 460m, for only $10!

Aya (top right) is worsted weight, 50% cotton, 35% silk, 15% wool. A beautiful lightweight yarn in lots of fun colourways. 135m per 50g.

I have been using Aya along with Rowan All Seasons Cotton to make a crocheted hexagon baby blanket.

This project was temporarily sidetracked to become a vest for my daughter. You can see how I made it by viewing my photos on Ravelry...yes, I finally put up some photos on Ravelry. This project is so totally addictive, each hexagon is so completely unique that making them never becomes tedious...and I have a VERY low tolerance for tedious work. I love, love, love working with Noro Yarn!

New Weekend and Spring Patterns from Berroco
Spring has sprung early with new yarn and patterns from Berroco! We have all the bright, fun colours of Weekend, a new easy care yarn. Winter News

Hello Knitsters!
Happy New Year! It's that time again to start dreaming of June...and going to Squam Art Workshops (SAW)! Last year I went and taught, with Denny, Natalie, and little Elwood in tow. This year Elwood will stay home, and Stephanie will come with us...after the amazing experience we had last year, I am really looking forward to June!

You have to visit the SAW website and browse through the courses offered. Some really inspiring knit designers will be there this year to teach: Jared Flood, Beth Brown-Reinsel, Gudrun Johnston, and Laura Nelkin. Our very own Denny will be there too, teaching spindle spinning, and oh yeah, I'll be teaching a Baby Sweater Class, How to Knit, and hosting a full day Knit Salon, where we just hang out and knit...we did it last year and it was positively magical. Knitting around a roaring fireplace in the middle of the day? That is my idea of perfection!

New shop arrivals are detailed below....

Keep Knitting,
Megan

P.S. I just have to mention how impressed I am with the knitting community as a whole for their donations for Haiti Relief. Stephanie threw up the "Knit Signal" and her readers responded by donating to MSF, overreaching the goal of 1 million dollars, set in 2004. Amazing!

Many knit designers who sell their patterns through Ravelry have generously offered a percentage of pattern sales to be donated to Haiti. These patterns can be browsed through here.

Don't delay though...because donations will only be collected until the end of January. Of special note: Our very own Laura of CosmicPluto Knits will donate 50% of all online pattern sales until the end of the month. Now would be the time to stock your Ravelry Library!

All-Canadian Yarn from Gala Wool
Gala Wool is a British Columbia-based yarn company that produces all-natural, Canadian yarn for knitting and weaving. They buy their yarn from MacAuslan's woolen mill in Prince Edward Island, which has been processing wool since 1870! The yarn is dyed all naturally using plant based dyes.

Each 113g / 4oz skein of worsted weight contains 220 yards of lanolin rich traditional yarn for hardwearing, beautiful projects. $20.

Sweater from Spud and Chloe
From the super cute yarn line Spud and Chloe is the aptly named Sweater. Made up of 55% wool and 45% organic cotton, this soft and squishy yarn comes in bright, clear colours and is superwash too!

Sweater is worsted weight and comes in big 100g skeins of 160 yards / 146m each. We have all 15 colours in stock now! $14.

Rollflex Tape Measures
Lots of sturdy, classic retractable tape measures from Germany! Very smooth rolling action, metric and imperial measurements - and nine super fun colours to boot! Keep one in every knitting bag so you'll always have a tape measure on hand. $7.

The Fibre Company Road to China Light
So soft, it must be felt to be believed! This sport weight yarn from the Fibre Company is 65% baby alpaca, 10% cashmere, 10% camel and 15% silk and feels just as soft as 100% cashmere. The dyeing process used by the Fibre Company always results in colours that look lit from within.

A generous 159 yards per 50g skein and available in 19 luminous shades! $16.
