*Please note: you must pay the class fee in advance to register for the class, either in person or with a credit card over the phone. Classes are non-refundable and non-transferable. In the event there is only one student signed up, the class will become a 60 minute private lesson with the instructor.

KNITTING 101 (or Learn to Knit)

COST: $50 straight or circular needles and yarn (Berroco Vintage) – This course is for absolute beginners. In the first week, you’ll learn how to cast on and the basic knit stitch. In the second week, you’ll learn to purl and cast off. We’ll send you on your way with a pattern to make yourself your first ribbed scarf.

KNITTING 102

COST: $30 plus materials – In the first week of Knitting 102 you will learn long tail cast on, how to increase and decrease, and how to read a simple pattern. In week two, you will learn how to knit in the round. We will send you on your way with either a simple shawl pattern or a simple cowl pattern. We recommend that you take a Fixing Mistakes class immediately after this class. Skill Level: beginner, but Knitting 101 precedes this class.

KNITTING PROJECT CLASS

COST: $100 for four weeks – You’ve made a couple of scarves and now you’re ready for your first big knitting project! This four week course takes you through the process of choosing a project, and equips you with all the skills you need to complete it. We guide you through the mysteries of checking gauge, teach you pattern-reading skills, increasing and decreasing, and demonstrate garment finishing and assembly. Suitable for any knitter looking to take on a challenge, or looking to learn some new skills with the guidance of an expert to help them along. Skill Level: all levels welcome.

TOE UP SOCKS WITH THE SOCK GURU

COST: $60 includes yarn for the first class – Working your socks toe-up is a great way to check fit and use up all your yarn – no leftovers! We teach you everything you need to know to make socks the other way – from the toe cast-on, to working the short row heel, shaping gussets, and the specialty cast-offs. We start with a mini sock, and then in the second class get you started on your first pair of full-size socks. If you’re new to socks, we recommend you start with our Top Down Socks class first, but once you’ve mastered top down, try this one to see which you prefer! Bring: 4mm double pointed needles. We’ll address not only how to work cables, but also how to read charts and patterns, and we’ll share expert tips on how to manage the knitting of a complex cable design. We’ll also get you going on your first project: a cabled coffee cup cozy. Bring: 4.5mm needles. Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.

LACE 101

COST: $60 includes yarn – Are you ready for a challenge? Are you looking to learn a new skill? Lace is the most beautiful work a knitter can produce. This bootcamp will teach you the basics of lace knitting, and get you ready for your first project. We’ll work some swatches and practice with an easy and fun lace bookmark. Skills required: Knit, purl, increasing and decreasing. Bring: 4.5 or 5mm straight or circular needles.

CONTINENTAL KNITTING

INSTRUCTOR: KATE ATHERLEY

COST: $40 – Want to knit faster? Are you ready to tackle colour work? Knitting continental style – with the yarn in your left hand rather than right – is the key to speed, and also helps you enormously with colorwork. We’ll also demonstrate a magical technique for working ribbing and seed stitch without moving the yarn. Suitable for knitters who are confident with knit and purl. Bring: 4.5mm or 5mm straight or circular needles and worsted weight yarn. Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.

FIXING MISTAKES

COST: $60 includes materials – It happens to every knitter – a mistake! This 2 hour session teaches you how to identify and fix all sorts of mistakes. We’ll share tips and tricks for dealing with dropped stitches, messed up patterns, and how to safely undo your knitting. You’ll even learn when a mistake doesn’t need to be fixed! If you’ve got a mistake, bring it. Suitable for new and experienced knitters. Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.

PATTERN READING FOR KNITTERS

COST: $40 – Knitting patterns can look like gibberish when you are unfamiliar with them! Behind the symbols, charts, abbreviations, and diagrams, there is a simple standard way of writing and reading a knit pattern. Learn how to decode any knitting pattern with confidence so that you can tackle new projects with ease! You are even welcome to bring in patterns that you would like to try out so that we can read through them step by step. Skill level: All levels welcome.

INTRO TO COLOURWORK: FAIR ISLE KNITTING

COST: $60   – This class will teach you everything you need to know to be a confident Fair Isle knitter. You’ll master reading the patterns and charts, and working with multiple colours – both one-handed and two-handed methods, both in-the-round and flat. This class is ideal for those who are new to colourwork, but are extremely confident in knit and purl and working in the round. Please bring 2 colours of smooth worsted weight yarn. Skill level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.

BABYCAKES BLANKET

COST: $55 – Making your own baby blanket is an easy and rewarding way to create something unique for the babies in your life. This class, with pattern designer Amelia Lyon, will teach you how to accomplish the cabled slip-stitch texture on this simple knit. The project is knit using a very baby-friendly 100% cotton yarn, which is included in the cost of the class. Please bring or purchase from the store a 32″ 5mm circular needle. Skill level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.

FEARLESS FINISHING

INSTRUCTOR: KATE ATHERLEY

1 LESSON, 2 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 8:00 – Tuesday, December 16th

COST: $40 – This two-hour workshop teaches all the key skills for assembling and finishing your knitting projects: seaming (including grafting), picking up stitches for necklines, weaving in ends, and the advantages and disadvantages of various cast-off techniques. The focus will be very much on making finishing as quick and painless as possible – we’ll share all the cheats and shortcuts we know. We’ll also demystify blocking, and talk about the proper care of your handknits. Homework required: Two 4 inch squares of stocking stitch worked with 4 or 5mm needles and worsted weight yarn; scrap worsted weight yarn in a contrasting color. Skill level: all levels welcome

MITTENS 101

INSTRUCTOR: KATE ATHERLEY

1 LESSON, 3 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 8:00 – Tuesday, October 28th

COST: $60 – Mittens are not only a key winter wardrobe item, and a great gift, but they’re also a terrific way to learn some new knitting skills. This class takes you through a mini “training” mitten – a classic cuff-up mitt with gusset thumb –  so that knitters can learn everything they need about making mitts in a short amount of time. In the second half of the class, students start a pair of full-size mittens.  Scrap yarn for the training mitten and worsted weight yarn (Berroco Vintage or similar) for full-size mittens is included in class fee. Knitters must bring double-pointed needles in 4.5mm and 6mm.

Skill level: advanced beginner – knitters need to be proficient with knit, purl; experience with knitting in the round is preferred but not critical.

ENTRELAC

INSTRUCTOR: KATE ATHERLEY

1 LESSON, 3 HOURS

COST: $60 – Entrelac is one of the most beautiful and mystifying of knitterly arts! We’ll teach you everything you need to know to create your own one-of-a-kind scarf , and along the way improve your skills with some new techniques for increasing, decreasing and picking up stitches.

Materials needed (15% off if purchased at Lettuce Knit): 5mm needles, gradient or self-striping worsted weight yarn

Skill level: advanced beginner – knitters need to be proficient with knit, purl, cast on, and cast-off.

THRUMMED MITTENS

INSTRUCTOR: MEG ANDERSON KILFOIL

2 LESSONS, 2 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 7:00pm – Friday, October 31st and November 7th

COST: $40, includes roving – Thrumming is a unique and useful technique that creates a naturally warm and cozy lining to mittens or slippers, and looks great too! Using pieces of unspun roving or fleece, this class will teach you to make a pair of thrummed mittens that will keep hands warm throughout the long winter. Good for students who are looking for something beyond the basic scarf or hat. Knitters should bring 200 yards of worsted weight yarns and appropriate double pointed needles (4.5mm-4mm).

Skill level: intermediate.  Previous mitten-knitting experience is an asset.

CUSTOM HATS

INSTRUCTOR: AMELIA LYON

2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 8:00pm – Monday, November 24th and December 1st

COST: $50 – Is your head on the small or large size and it’s tough to find hats? Have you ever found the perfect yarn for a hat, but couldn’t find the pattern to match? This class will teach you the basics of designing your own custom toque or beanie-style hat, from start to finish including sizing, ribbing, decreases, and more. Knitters should be fairly comfortable with at least one circular knitting technique and should be bring approximately 250 yards of yarn and the appropriately-sized needles. (Smaller heads will need less yarn).

Skill level: intermediate.  Previous hat-knitting experience is an asset.

LEGWARMERS IN THE ROUND

INSTRUCTOR: AMELIA LYON

1 LESSON, 2 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 8:00pm – Friday, October 10th

COST: $30 – Legwarmers are increasingly popular to wear and to knit. Learn to knit this practical accessory in the round using double pointed needles or the magic loop method! This class is ideal for those who know how to knit and purl and are looking for something a little bit more complicated.  Materials not included.  Students must bring at least 200-400 yards of worsted weight yarn and double-pointed needles or long circular needles in 4.5mm.

Skill level: basic-plus.  Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on, cast off.
