Knitting Classes

*Please note: you must pay the class fee in advance to register for the class, preferably in person. Classes are non-refundable and non-transferable. In the event there is only one student signed up, the class will may become a 60 minute private lesson with the instructor.

KNITTING 101 (or Learn to Knit) with AMELIA LYON or SCOTTIE FECH
2 LESSONS, 2 HOURS TOTAL

  • 10:00am – 11:00am – Saturdays, January 10th and 17th – CLASS IS FULL

COST: $65 includes straight or circular needles and yarn (Berroco Vintage, Rowan or Topsy Farms) – This course is for absolute beginners. In the first week, you’ll learn how to cast on and the basic knit stitch. In the second week, you’ll learn to purl and cast off. We’ll send you on your way with a pattern to make yourself your first ribbed scarf.
Skill Level: absolute beginner

KNITTING 102 with AMELIA LYON or SCOTTIE FECH
2 LESSONS, 2 HOURS TOTAL

COST: $50 – In the first week of Knitting 102 you will learn long tail cast on, how to increase and decrease, and how to read a simple pattern. In week two, you will learn how to knit in the round. We will send you on your way with either a simple shawl pattern or a simple cowl pattern. We recommend that you take a Fixing Mistakes class immediately after this class.

Skill Level: beginner, but Knitting 101 precedes this class.
Materials: scrap yarn for practicing techniques will be supplied. In the second week, you will choose a project and yarn that will expand your current knitting horizons.

KNITTING PROJECT CLASS with KATE ATHERLEY
4 LESSONS, 8 HOURS TOTAL

  • 6:00-8:00 pm – Thursdays, February 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th (Feb. 5th class – Amelia will substitute for Kate)
  • 6:00-8:00 pm – Thursdays, March 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th

COST: $110 for four weeks – So you’ve made a couple of scarves and now you’re ready for your first big knitting project! This four week course is geared to helping you with whatever project you’d like to tackle next. Since there are many students starting new projects on the first night, we suggest you purchase your supplies and patterns in advance of the class. The class will help guide you through the mysteries of checking gauge, teach you pattern-reading skills, increasing and decreasing, and possibly demonstrate garment finishing and assembly. Suitable for any knitter looking to take on a challenge, or looking to learn some new skills with the guidance of an expert to help them along.
Skill Level: all levels welcome.

TOP-DOWN SOCKS WITH THE SOCK GURU, KATE ATHERLEY
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL

COST: $70 includes yarn for the first class – Learn how to make top-down socks. We teach you everything you need to know to knit socks – from working in the round to turning the heel to shaping the toe. We start with a mini sock, and then in the second class you get started on your first pair of full-size socks. If you’re new to socks, start here!

Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knitand purl, cast on and cast off.
Materials: 4mm double-pointed needles for the first class (these can be borrowed if you don’t already have them), sock yarn and appropriately sized DPNs for second class.

TOE-UP SOCKS WITH THE SOCK GURU, KATE ATHERLEY
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL

  • 6:00-8:00 pm – Tuesdays, February 10th and 17th

COST: $70 includes yarn for the first class – Working your socks toe-up is a great way to check fit and use up all your yarn – no leftovers! We teach you everything you need to know to make socks the other way – from the toe cast-on, to working the short row heel, shaping gussets, and the specialty cast-offs. We start with a mini sock, and then in the second class get you started on your first pair of full-size socks. If you’re new to socks, we recommend you start with our Top Down Socks class first, but once you’ve mastered top down, try this one to see which you prefer! Bring: 4mm double pointed needles to the first class. If you don’t have them, they can be borrowed from the shop.

Skill Level: intermediate.  Student is expected to have knit a sock before taking this class.  Try Top Down socks first!
Materials: sock yarn and appropriately sized DPNs for second class.

TWO SOCKS, TWO CIRCULARS with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL

  • 6:00-8:00 pm – Tuesday, March 10th

COST: $55 – This class teaches how to knit two socks at the same time on two circular needles. We’ll discuss both top-down and top-up techniques. A nice addition to the sock-knitter’s toolkit, this technique helps banish Second Sock Syndrome and ensures that your pair matches exactly. Using 2 colors of worsted weight yarn, we will cast on and work two complete, separate mini socks at the same time with two circular needles.

Skill Level: Some experience with both top-down and toe-up sock knitting is necessary.
Materials: 4mm double-pointed needles

CABLES 101 with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL

COST: $55 – Learn the knitter’s dirtiest secret – cables are easy! We’ll address not only how to work cables, but also how to read charts and patterns, and we’ll share expert tips on how to manage the knitting of a complex cable design. We’ll also get you going on your first project: a cabled coffee cup cozy.

Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.
Materials: 4.5mm double-pointed needles and worsted weight yarn

LACE 101 with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL

  • 6:00-8:00 pm – Tuesday, March 24th

COST: $60 includes yarn – Are you ready for a challenge? Are you looking to learn a new skill? Lace can be one of the most beautiful work a knitter can produce. This bootcamp will teach you the basics of lace knitting, and get you ready for your first project. We’ll work some swatches and practice with an easy and fun lace bookmark.
Skills required: Knit, purl, increasing and decreasing.
Materials: 4mm or 4.5mm double-pointed needles.

CONTINENTAL KNITTING with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL

COST: $55 – Are you ready to tackle colour work and potentially learn how to knit faster? Knitting continental style – with the yarn in your left hand rather than right – is the key to speed for many, and also helps you enormously with colourwork. We’ll also demonstrate a magical technique for working ribbing and seed stitch without moving the yarn. Suitable for knitters who are confident with knit and purl.

Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.
Materials: 4.5mm or 5mm double-pointed needles.

FIXING MISTAKES with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL

COST: $55 includes materials – It happens to every knitter – a mistake! This 2 hour session teaches you how to identify and fix all sorts of mistakes. We’ll share tips and tricks for dealing with dropped stitches, messed up patterns, and how to safely undo your knitting. You’ll even learn when a mistake doesn’t need to be fixed! If you’ve got a mistake, bring it. Suitable for new and experienced knitters.
Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.

BABYCAKES BLANKET with AMELIA LYON (PATTERN BY AMELIA LYON)
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS

COST: $55 – Making your own baby blanket is an easy and rewarding way to create something unique for the babies in your life. This class, with pattern designer Amelia Lyon, will teach you how to accomplish the cabled slip-stitch texture on this simple knit.
Skill Level: advanced beginner. Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on and cast off.
Materials (pattern included): 32″ 5mm circular needle and 650 yards of your chosen yarn, in a DK or worsted weight yarn.

FEARLESS FINISHING with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS

  • 6:00-8:00pm – Tuesday, March 17th

COST: $55 – This two-hour workshop teaches all the key skills for assembling and finishing your knitting projects: seaming (including grafting), picking up stitches for necklines, weaving in ends, and the advantages and disadvantages of various cast-off techniques. The focus will be very much on making finishing as quick and painless as possible – we’ll share all the cheats and shortcuts we know. We’ll also demystify blocking, and talk about the proper care of your handknits.
Homework required: Two 4 inch squares of stocking stitch worked with 4 or 5mm needles and worsted weight yarn; scrap worsted weight yarn in a contrasting color. Skill level: all levels welcome

MITTENS 101 with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 3 HOURS

  • 6:00-9:00pm – Thursday, January 29th

COST: $70 – Mittens are not only a key winter wardrobe item, and a great gift, but they’re also a terrific way to learn some new knitting skills. This class takes you through a mini “training” mitten – a classic cuff-up mitt with gusset thumb –  so that knitters can learn everything they need about making mitts in a short amount of time. In the second half of the class, students start a pair of full-size mittens.
Materials needed: Scrap yarn for the training mitten and worsted weight for full-size mittens are provided as part of the class fee. Knitters must bring double-pointed needles in 4.5mm and 6mm.
Skill Level: advanced beginner – knitters need to be proficient with knit, purl; experience with knitting in the round is preferred but not critical.

ENTRELAC with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 3 HOURS

  • 6:00-9:00pm – Tuesday, February 24th

COST: $70 – Entrelac is one of the most beautiful and mystifying of knitterly arts! We’ll teach you everything you need to know to create your own one-of-a-kind scarf , and along the way improve your skills with some new techniques for increasing, decreasing and picking up stitches.
Materials needed: 5mm needles, gradient or self-striping worsted weight yarn
Skill Level: advanced beginner – knitters need to be proficient with knit, purl, cast on, and cast-off.

CUSTOM HATS with AMELIA LYON
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS

  • 6:00-8:00pm – Mondays, March 2nd and 9th

COST: $65 – Is your head on the small or large size and it’s tough to find hats? Have you ever found the perfect yarn for a hat, but couldn’t find the pattern to match? This class will teach you the basics of designing your own custom toque or beanie-style hat, from start to finish including sizing, brim, shaping, stylistic elements, and more.
Materials needed: 250 yards of yarn and the appropriately-sized needles. (Smaller heads will need less yarn).
Skill Level: intermediate. Knitters should be fairly comfortable with at least one circular knitting technique. Previous hat-knitting experience is an asset.

TOP-DOWN BABY SWEATER with KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 3 HOURS

  • 6:00-9:00pm – Tuesday, March 3rd

COST: $70 – Looking to finally tackle a full sweater? This class is a perfect introduction to the ever-popular top-down style of garment construction. We will work a complete mini-sweater project, building all the skills and techniques you need to successfully work any such project, whether for kids or adults. Techniques like increasing, dividing the sleeves, use of markers, working in the round, shaping, sizing/fit, picking up stitches, and finishing will be addressed, and a copy of a baby sweater pattern is included.

Materials needed: 4.5mm 24″ circular needle, 4.5mm DPNs, and approximately 50 grams of worsted weight yarn in a light colour
Skill Level: advanced beginner – knitters need to be proficient with knit, purl, cast on, and cast-off.  No sweater-knitting experience necessary.

HATS AND LEGWARMERS IN THE ROUND with SCOTTIE FECH
2 LESSON, 2 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 7:00pm – Friday, January 23rd and 30th

COST: $70 – Learn the basics of knitting in the round – this class will enable you to make a basic hat and leg warmers to keep the cold at bay this winter! Skills taught in this class: working with double-pointed needles (DPNs), joining to work in the round, gauge, increases, decreases, and casting off in pattern.

Materials needed: we recommend a skein Cascade ECO+ and one set of double-pointed needles.  If you would prefer a circular needle, please either bring one with you, or discuss your best choice with our teacher before the class starts.
Skill Level: Advanced beginner.  Must be comfortable with knit and purl, cast on, cast off.

Willow Cowl, fingering

WILLOW COWL with AMELIA LYON
1 LESSONS, 2 HOURS

  • 6:00 – 8:00pm – Monday, January 12th

COST: $70 – Currently the 8th most popular cowl pattern online (and climbing!), the Willow Cowl is a must-knit for anyone looking to expand their skills past Knitting 102.  Since it’s original fingering weight version was so popular, Amelia has re-written this cowl for a variety of weights to make it more versatile.  Choose a skein or two of your favourite yarn, and this class will get you going on your own cowl.

Materials needed: 1 skein of: Fingering, sport, DK, worsted, aran or two skeins of bulky or super bulky.
Skill Level: Advanced-basic.  Previous knitting in the round experience is an asset, but not a necessity.

Colour Affection

COST: $80 –Have you wondered what short rows are or what they are for? The mystery will be all cleared up in this 2 week/2 hour class. We will start with a washcloth project to learn the technique. After that, hone your skills on a larger project with one of these 2 popular projects: Heartbreak or Colour Affection. Please bring a 4mm circular (24″ or 32″) needle. Yarn for the washcloth is included in the class fee.

Materials needed: Northbound Knittng (NBK) fingering weight – enough yarn in your chosen colours for either Heartbreak or Colour Affection.
Skill Level: Advanced-basic.  Student should be comfortable with casting on, binding off, knit and purl
