DYE WORKSHOPS
We are really excited about being able to offer our clientele a dedicated environment in which to dye yarn! You don't have to worry about contaminating your kitchen, or where to safely store dyes in your home. The best part? Leave the clean up to us! And once you take a Dye Workshop with us, you are welcome to schedule Independent Studio Time to hone your dyeing techniques at your own pace; perhaps you'll even be the next Fleece Artist!

About our Dye Workshops
We have two classes of dyes in our studio. We use Procion MX Fibre Reactive Dyes, which are cold water process dyes, for dyeing cellulose (plant) fibres: cotton, linen, bamboo, and rayon to name a few.

For dyeing protein fibres, such as wool, silk, and alpaca, we use Jacquard Acid Dyes. Both of these types of dye are considered non-toxic when used properly. They both produce brillant colours that are both light fast and wash fast.

Included in all Workshop fees is a N95 particulate respirator mask, and a pair of Nitrile (non-latex) gloves that are yours to keep and use again. The use of dyes is also included in the workshop fee (except for in Unsupervised Studio Time). The only necessary ingredient not included in the Workshop fees is the yarn! You are welcome to bring in your own undyed yarn to Workshops , but of course we have a tempting selection of undyed yarns and fibres in our Studio at suprisingly economical prices, available for purchase. If you do bring in your own yarn or fibre, make sure you have correct information about fibre content. We cannot be responsible for poor outcomes due to unknown fibre content.

Safety Information
The dyes and auxiliary chemicals used in our dye studio are considered relatively non-toxic, but it is best to avoid unnecessary exposure. Keep in mind that they are industrial chemicals and not intended for inhalation or ingestion. Of utmost importance is the use of a respirator mask when measuring or mixing dry dye powder. If wearing a mask (for even a short period of time) would be problematic for you because of respitory difficulties, please let us know when you register. Masks, gloves, and aprons will be provided. Please wear comfortable close-toed shoes (no sandals), long pants or skirts, and clothing that you wouldn't mind getting a drop or two of dye on, just in case! Every workshop will focus on safe dyeing practices, and as long as you follow the precautions laid out, your dyeing experience will be safe and fun!

Special Precautions for Pregnant/Breastfeeding Participants
It is prudent to be even more stringent with safety precautions if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding. For that reason, if you are pregnant we will ask you to sit out of the segment of the class that involves mixing/measuring dry dye powder, not just because of the risk of contact with the dry dye particles, but because wearing a respirator mask carries a risk of lowering your blood oxygen level, however slight (which baby doesn't like). If you are not pregnant, but are breastfeeding, it is your choice if you wish to participate in the mixing/measuring of the dry dye powder. If you wish to sit out, we will be happy to do that part for you! Breastfeeding mothers should be extra cautious to remove their "dye clothes" before breastfeeding.
