You've made a couple of scarves and now you're ready for your first big knitting project! This four week course takes you through the process of choosing a project, and equips you with all the skills you need to complete it. We guide you through the mysteries of checking gauge, teach you pattern-reading skills, increasing and decreasing, and demonstrate garment finishing and assembly. Suitable for new knitters looking to take on a challenge, or intermediate knitters looking to learn some new skills.

CROCHET HEXAGONS

Crochet hexagons are still going strong, and as soon as you make one, you'll know why! They are addictive and so easy! This course is appropriate for those with little or no crochet experience. Learn how to do the basic crochet stitches and follow a pattern. You will also learn how to switch colours and different options for joining the hexagons. Make a potholder, a pillow, or go whole hog and make the blanket as shown.

CHUNKY COWL

Cowls are a wonderful alternative to scarves. They are warm and cozy, and best of all, quick! This chunky cowl is a great introduction to circular knitting and will give you a finished project in no time. This will be a great project to have in your repertoire for the holiday season! FINGERLESS MITTS

Fingerless mittens are perfect for transitional weather, or under full mittens for extra warmth in the depths of winter. They make perfect gifts and are an excellent use for those gorgeous single skeins in all of our stashes. But what if you can't find the perfect pattern to go with your perfect yarn? This class will go over various common thumb gussets and discuss the necessary shaping required for a well fitting mitt for any hand. The skills learned in this class will translate easily to knitting full mittens as well.

SOCKS 101 - TOP DOWN

Learn how to make socks from the cuff down to the toe on double-pointed needles. The first session teaches you everything you need to know to knit socks - from working in the round to turning the heel to shaping the toe. The second session shows you how to design your own sock patterns for any yarn, and any foot. Suitable for knitters with some experience -- but you need not have used DPNs before. Bring scrap yarn - worsted weight or heavier -- to the first class.

Working your socks toe-up is a great way to check fit and use up all your yarn - no leftovers! This class is the same as Socks 101 - Top Down, except you will learn how to knit from the toe-up! Take both, and decide which method you prefer!

CABLES 101

Intimidated by cables? Learn the knitter's dirty secret - cables are the easiest thing in the world. We'll teach you how to work all sorts of cables, and read both written instructions and charts. Bring some scrap yarn - worsted weight or heavier --and needles to match. Suitable for novice knitters - as long as you can knit and purl, you can cable.

OH DEER! MITTEN KNIT ALONG

Time to tackle stranded knitting with a fun mitten knit along! Learn the basics of two-colour stranded knitting ("fair isle") with a mitten knit in the round. You will also learn how to create Latvian Braids at the cuffs of your mitts. Two-handed and one- handed techniques will be covered, as well as weaving vs. floats and following a colourwork chart. See fabulous patterns emerge before your eyes! Previous colourwork experience not needed, but knowing how to knit in the round is an asset!

FIXING MISTAKES

It happens to every knitter -- a mistake!  This 2 hour session teaches you how to identify and fix all sorts of mistakes.  We'll share tips and tricks for dealing with dropped stitches, messed up patterns, and how to safely undo your knitting.  And we even teach you when a mistake doesn't need to be fixed!  If you've got a mistake, bring it.  Suitable for new and experienced knitters.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES

You've knitted the sweater - now it's time to put it together. We'll teach various seaming techniques, picking up stitches for necklines and buttonbands, working buttonholes, and weaving in ends. We'll also discuss blocking and care of knitwear. Bring your unassembled projects if you have some, or just come to learn.

KNIT A BABY SWEATER

Want to learn to knit faster? Continental knitting is the way to go! This method involves holding the yarn in your left hand and "picking"  the yarn instead of "throwing" it. Make a scarf or something more ambitious, if you're up to the challenge or have something specific in mind. Some knowledge of knitting and purling is strongly encouraged but not essential.

LEARN TO DROP SPINDLE

Tired of the drop spindle and itching for something new? Or just want to dive right into spinning on a wheel? Spinning wheel basics will cover all you need to know to get going with a wheel. You'll try different types of fibres and preparations, working with colour, as well as multiple wheel techniques and plying. Try out different models of wheel to find out what suits you best. Space is limited, so sign up early! Some spinning experience is recommended, but not necessary.

Perfect for those who have never knit a sweater before!

SIZING AND FIT

The biggest challenge for many knitters when choosing a pattern is knowing which size to make. This class will show you how to decide - and set you well along the way to a successful and flattering sweater project. We explain how to read sizing tables and schematics. We'll show you how to measure yourself. And most importantly, we'll explain garment fit, including demystifying terms like "negative ease"- and show you how to tweak it so it looks perfect on you.

LACE 101

Are you ready for a challenge?  Are you looking  to learn a new skill?  Lace is the most beautiful work a knitter can produce.  Start your lace knitting adventures with a triangular shawl in a traditional Shetland lace pattern,  The first session will teach you the basics of lace knitting, and get you ready for your first shawl.  The second session will focus on expanding your skills as you work the shawl project.  Skills required:  Knit, purl, increasing and decreasing.  Supplies to bring to the first class:  scrap yarn in a worsted or aran weight and a pair of 4.5mm or 5mm needles. 

EXPERT TIPS

Confused about cast-ons? Baffled by bind offs?  Unsure about increasing and decreasing? This 2-hour session will provide an variety of techniques for each, discussing which technique is best for which situation. Using the right technique can make your knitting easier, and make the finish product look better! Suitable for knitters of all levels. Techniques will include: long tail cast-on, provisional cast-on, Judy's Magic cast-on; Russian Lace bind-offs, the sewn bind-off, the new Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off; invisible, visible and directional increases and decreases.  We'll answer all those tricky questions like what M1 is, and what it means to bind off in pattern.

SWEETLY WORN SHAWL

A perfect first shawl pattern. Very easy to knit, but just enough interesting changes to keep you going! It is easy to get entranced by a beautiful skein or two of handdyed sock yarn, but it can sometimes be hard to decide what to do with them later. Socks can seem like a waste, and a tendency to pool makes them difficult to work with. This simple shawl stripes a solid and handpainted yarn together to break up pooling and showcase colour. Let your sock yarns realize their true potential! Materials: two socks yarns that compliment each other, one solid, one variegated.
